ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationship between the cognitive function of the elderly and the oral health and activities of daily living. The subjects were 223 elderly people more than 65 years of age. Data collection was conducted from October 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018. The data were analyzed using a t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. A Scheffe test was used for post-analysis. The results showed that the cognitive function had a positive correlation with the oral health effect index (r=.173, p<.01), oral health evaluation index (r=.206, p<.001), and activities of daily living (r=.283, p<.001). The activities of daily living showed a positive correlation with the oral health effect index (r=.248, p<.01) and oral health evaluation index (r=.265, p<.001). The activities of daily living was found to have a statistically significant effect on the dementia status. In conclusion, poor oral health or activities of daily living may be a risk factor for cognitive decline. Therefore, it is essential to promote oral health and the activities of daily living through whole body health care to prevent cognitive decline of the elderly.
