ABSTRACT

The Korean government has been seeking to cultivate creative convergence-type talents who are equipped with basic knowledge in humanities, sociology, and scientific technology in a balanced manner through national education courses. The objective of this study is to develop a science-arts integrative STEAM program to develop the scientific problem-solving ability and artistic sensitivity of elementary school students through the using of educational robots that are applied in the elementary school academic curriculum in Korea. One concern associated with the existing STEAM education is the failure to integrate the field of art and reflect the intrinsic value of art within the education. This study is intended to develop a STEAM program that provides experience of creatively expressing and appreciating artistic works in the using of robot with ‘mobile’ and ‘abstraction’ as activity themes. The STEAM educational program has been designed by creatively applying scientific technology knowledge through the program of ‘creation of mobile’ for 4th graders in elementary school and the program of ‘creating draw-bot’ for 6th graders in elementary school while introducing them to the field of art. The STEAM education suggested in this study is expected to provide academic resources that build creativity and sensitivity through natural integration of robot technology and art.
