ABSTRACT

This paper aims to build a theory about the birth of university with different stories in Europe and Asia. Many researches and arguments have been studied about its conditions of birth and implications for the following development of European universities including American ones. On the other hand, the abundant traditions/stories of Academic institutions in Asia could not have maintained the prestige, which is often related to the Asian defeat in the modern time. This paper is challenging these two different stories by a trial of explaining using the Darwinian theory of evolution: that is, the university as the unique species of social organism has been evolved from the natural process in the specific conditions began in the medieval time in Europe while there was a not similar thing in Asia. Those basic elements of the European model of university have been proposed in the paper to be governing body of freedom, curriculum of science, and instructional tools of printed books and world language.
