A Study on the Requirements for the Development of Reading Comprehension Programs for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to develop a program to improve reading comprehension for students with autism spectrum disorder by conducting a Delphi survey for experts. Five professors in the department of special education, five professors in the Department of speech therapy, ten teachers of language rehabilitation, and ten teachers of special education participated in the Delphi survey. The opinions were collected through three times’ Delphi surveys on the contents for teaching, evaluation, and curriculum linkage for students with autism spectrum disorder. As a result of analyzing the statements of experts on the assessment area for the development of reading comprehension program for students with autism spectrum disorder, it was able to be divided into 8 questions for official evaluation and 4 questions for informal questions. In the reading comprehension assessment area, ‘read comprehension evaluation’ question was the highest, followed by ‘language ability assessment’ and ‘vocabulary assessment.’ The items on the story map were 5 items on the vocabulary map, 12 items on the story text map, 7 items on the inference map, and 6 items on the evaluation following the story text map. Based on the results of this study, discussion and conclusion are suggested.
