ABSTRACT

The OECD has organized various working groups to support policy development of key emerging technologies by promoting international cooperation. The OECD WPN (Nanotechnology Working Group) provided a forum for international cooperation to discuss policy development of nanotechnology. OECD WPN has contributed to the evolution of international nanotechnology policies by supporting the development of policy elements such as research/development, production/industrialization, institutionalization, and social contribution. As the major trends in nanotechnology development policy have shifted from the promotion of basic research to the industrialization, new demands have arisen for measuring the economic impact of nanotechnology. One of the major contributions of WPN activities is the development of economic impact measurement model through international cooperation. This study briefly summarizes past activities by policy makers/researchers on the economic impact assessment of nanotechnology conducted through the WPN. Specifically, current study summarizes past research on the DEFRA model and suggests improvements for future research.
