A Simple Energy Efficient Routing Algorithm for the IoT Environment

    Energy is very valuable in the Internet of Things (IoT) environment, where nodes only have a limited amount of energy and low or no chance of getting recharged. For this reason, saving energy and developing energy efficient schemes isa challenging topic for researchers. Developing an energy efficient routing protocol is particularly important since the IoT nodes use their most of energy for communication purposes. In this paper, we propose a simple energy efficient routing algorithm for IoT applications. The proposed algorithm utilizes the residual energy of the nodes along with a value which we call the participation rank. The participation rank of a node defines how frequently that node is used in routing processes.
