Investigating the Innovation Activity and the Intellectual Property Right Use of Export Firms

This study tries to identify the relationship between export activities and innovation activities, to empirically investigate the effects of IPR use as innovation on performance, and to research how various kinds of IPRs are used in various industries to improve performance. In this study, empirical analysis is conducted to examine hypotheses constructing panel data of 4,225 export firms (3,269 manufacturing firms and 1,206 service firms). Data set is employed for analysis from “Survey of Business Activities” administered for 9 years (2006~2014). This paper finds that R&D and export activities of exporting firms make positive effects on IPR creation. In addition, this study confirms that outsourced R&D make positive effects on export performance as well as in-house R&D through empirical analysis. Furthermore, it shows that all types of IPRs are used by manufacturing firms to appropriate innovation in overseas market. In the regression result for service firm, patent and design right is found to make significant positive influence on export performance, however.
