Local Wisdom of Indigenous Marriage with belis in Lamaholot Community Tradition, NTT

ABSTRACT
Local wisdom which is summarized in the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) community marriage ceremony is reflected in the tradition of giving belis. Essentially, belis is to support a woman's prestige in patrilineal life, and to have a female family hold a respectable place in front of the male family. The method used in this research using qualitative descriptive approach and with the type of field research with interpretive-phenomenological paradigm. This study explains about adat marriage. The type of data in this study uses primary data and secondary data. Primary data is the data obtained directly from the first source; the authors use direct interviews to informants. While the secondary data from review of related literature/ relevant studies. This study reveals that the views of community leaders towards belis realized in elephant ivory is a mandatory requirement in the marriage of the Lamaholot tribe, is actually considered burdensome for its irrational price. The tradition of belis reflects an assumption of sincerity for a man who wants to marry their daughters. However, in this contemporary era, Lamaholot people are keep practicing the giving for belis in their marriage as an effort to preserving the tradition, as well as the way of glorifying the women and elevating their social degrees.
